XDC Las Vegas

May 23, 2010 Leave a comment

This past weekend was XDC (xtreme drift circuit) here in Las Vegas. I worked Friday day and night and missed Friday’s practice and most of the day Saturday due to over-sleeping. I went with the intentions on hanging out with a few friends that were in town and shoot my friend George’s FC. It didn’t happen unfortunately due to both our hectic schedules and simply bad timing, however congrats on placing 3rd George and congrats on the baby any day now!!
side note: I really wish FD ProAM would be at PIR instead of FIR this year, I’d love to see a pro-drift event out there, that track is glorious!!!

I don’t have a lot of pics to choose from unfortunately, I got there THAT late. OOPs. This is George’s gorgeous LS1 powered FC. One of my favorite FC’s ever right up there with JTP’s. George’s build is so tedious and well done, I remember when he used to drive his “sil8ty” to the Hankook Series back in 2003-4? Driving from AZ to vegas with no A/C is something I think we’ll all never do again. What were we thinking back then?

A lot of FD drivers are doing both comps, Forrest Wang, Alex Pfiefer, and Quoc Ly were both out there this weekend tearing it up! Alex’s SC300 is another great build. Not a fan of the flames, but I think he cleaned up the decals a bit since the last I’ve seen it.

This was the first time LVMS let anyone use the inside road-course for drifting. Turn one seemed to be the culprit of the day during tandem, the long sweeping entry would throw a lot of the drivers off-course.
The media spots to shoot weren’t ideal at all honestly unless I had a DX camera with a 1.4x tele converter or a 400mm on a FX. The images are heavily cropped, I’m not pleased. Hopefully I stay on track and save up enough for a D300s back up body, aiming for end of july through mid august. (kind of a b-day present to myself!) Until next time!!

KEEP DRIFTING FUN

April 20, 2010 Leave a comment

Vegasdrift had its VD018 event this last Saturday as well. Shown above is Mike Bolanos, aka BOMAC Las Vegas veteran drifter since about 2002-03 back in the $30 Hankook Tire drift clinics!!

Also, check out the new watermark for my personal stuff. Its pretty gnarly. Thanks again to Lennon Franz @ Dorkidori clothing for the logo and my current business cards.

I haven’t shot drifting in a while, almost 3 months now! I kind of lost interest because from a media aspect, its hard to make it worth your time, and I usually end up going to support friends. I’m hoping to maybe take some time off in July and hit up FD Seattle @ Evergreen Speedway. I just need to find someone that will pay me!! That track looks awesome, and…well its Seattle!! The main reason I went out there was to show support to a buddy Josh Herron who’s part of KEEP DRIFTING FUN .

Here is one of Josh doing his thing this past weekend. Josh and Will are two of the drifting communities best videographers hands down. There might be maybe one or two more others that I can think of, but definitely those two are definitely KICK-ASS. (btw you all should watch that movie, its hilarious!)
I don’t think he’ll be making his way back to Vegas until August for Formula D Round 5, good luck buddy! To keep this short and sweet, they are traveling across the US making a DVD that covers drifting in all forms, street, track, competition, and all that entails to “KEEP DRIFTING FUN”.

sometimes….

I feel like shooting automotive….sometimes i feel like a nut.

So I’ve been really busy working with WENDOH media, which is SpyOnVegas.com, 944 magazine and vegasSEVEN which is a new weekly local magazine which is great, I love staying busy! This shot was very last minute, and well, so were the edits. I haven’t shot anything automotive related in a while besides drifting, let alone rig shots. I would like to shoot some more, but time is just so scarce lately. My sleeping schedule is all sorts of messed up, but I’m feeling a lot healthier than I did a few months ago, which is good! Asthma is the worst!

short update, I’ll try to keep updating as much as possible still, bear with me.

VD016 recap!

Vegas drift had another successful event at the LVMS bullring parking lot. Not as many drivers as last time, but tons of track time. Good job to Nick Dizon and staff! Heres some images from the event, the rest can be found HERE

Two highlights, one of local videographer Joshua Herron who just released his 10:42 2009 Formula D recap! We had a after-drift event launch party for it! Definitely worth watching! check it out HERE

Second is a quick video from vd016 from Darin Ferraro, who runs APEXKINGS.COM and owns this beautiful GTR. I have a quick cameo in his video, listen for the heartbeat. Check that video out on youtube HERE

Thanks for checking up!

VD POSITIVE

Vegas Drift had its VD016 Pre-tech inspection on Thursday night at Garage Vegas. Garage Vegas is something special to the Las Vegas drifting community because its a place that they can go and have seasoned veterans point them in the right direction. Garage Vegas started as partnership between drivers who just needed a place to build and work on cars like their owns. Vegas Drift’s own Mello, who’s had his share of VIP rides to 240’s, and Pro-am driver Shawn Coward, and Formula D/D1 USA champ Forrest Wang. It just snapped one morning, that working under a car port or out of a storage unit is just not cutting it anymore. They have all the tools and the knowledge to get the job done, and very very clean work at that. When you walk into Garage Vegas, you see cars with full cages, tubbed fenders, stitch-welded chassis and gussets galore. Another thing I noticed was how somebody there really loves to weld. From the work benches, racks, and even a grind rail for bmx/skating after hours. Not a bad gig they got going over there!

The hottest thing there were Forrest Wang’s new “Wangles” which are cut-shortened spindles for that extra-gangsta angle! Check out a set on his s14. Project Mu disc brakes are absolutely ridiculous. Oh, for the photography guys, Sigma 15mm Fish + sb900 on cam sb800 off cam. I liked this shot a lot!

I thought the brake calipers were HUGE on those, then across the garage is “wang-mobile #2” with these ENDLESS calipers. These cars are so money!! These are what every s-chassis owner would dream of having!! I remember seeing Forrest’s BN s14 for the first time and being blown away especially from a driver with no major backings. +1 for the privateers!!

Here’s motor shot of Shawn’s almost finished 2010 rebuild. Lots of chrome, anodized blue, and pearl white overwhelming the engine bay. Kind of makes this fisheye shot legit because it can throw you off if you stare at it too long!!

And lastly, one more of Forrest’s s14.5’s engine bay, (it seems like this is a Forrest Wang feature by now but I assure you it’s not, that’s maybe later in the future!) This pictures funny to me because the sticker “SNAFU” (which is a bmx accy company) just kept making me think of ZT’s “BASTFU”! (sorry if you don’t get it, you probably failed!)

Lots of grilling, drinking, good times at Garage Vegas. Everyone passed tech got a “VD POSITIVE” sticker, which in its own is just awesome. Thanks guys!

GEARWHORE. It’s a term I’ve used to describe myself on numerous occasions, no matter what it applies to! I’ve recently made a huge gear change-up over the last 2 weeks upgrading strobes to consolidating lenses (sorta). Adding a macro and fish-eye to my pelican case should prove itself handy I’m sure! I also sold my 2006 YZ125 today. I’ve had this thing up for sale for quite some time. I actually got really close to my asking price, which was worth the wait. The buyer drove from San Jose overnight! I can’t explain how happy I am its out of the garage, but I’m going to miss it. I now have 0 things related to any type of motorsport or fun on 2 or 4 wheels, that’s pretty depressing, seeing as most of this started from my addiction of racing (pre-heart and asthma complications!) In my head I keep telling myself I need things like studio space (which I’m currently working on), figure out how much longer I’ll call Las Vegas home, and clearing up remaining debt, more importantly what I’m going to be doing career wise, I’m not getting any younger!

Anyways, when I realized I have nothing left connecting me to the automotive “scene” out here besides my photography, it threw me off a bit. Is this goodbye? not quite sure yet honestly, my outlook on photography is pointed in a completely different direction now, and I’m not sure if I’ll shoot the FD events this year like I planned on. Long Beach, Irwindale and Vegas will probably be the only ones due to location, but its also because the people and the “feel” of the event that I love. A lot of people ask me when I’m building another car, or why I don’t go for a ride-along at the local events. Its simply feeding temptation, and getting stuck into that “racing is an addiction only cured by poverty” square. I don’t believe in modding a street car because its just too much to worry about in Sin City, I’d rather have a full blown race car, truck and trailer, and there’s just no room in my life for any of that. Back to the “Maybe in the future” remark I say too often! Anyways, this post was for my bike, you’ll be missed! You’re my boy BLUE!!!

Vegasdrift 015

December 7, 2009 7 comments

This past Saturday was Vegasdrift’s 015 event, which included a small competition and toy drive out at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Nick and his staff always pull through for the vegas community. Tons of track time with two course layouts side by side, and 2 run groups! Good thing its not the summer! Majority of the cars there would be overheating! I’m just messing, only talking about the rotary guys. HA! Actually the night before the event was about 30 degrees! Probably one of the coldest nights we’ve had in a while, so by the time the event was over (when i started shooting the drifting) my hands were freezing! I could barely press the shutter! This is going to sound….., but it might be a wardrobe malfunction, I gotta start wearing jackets that insulate heat!!

So when I arrived at the track, I used two lenses only, both being manual focus, and both being semi new to the arsenal. One was a Korean GEM by the name of ROKINON 85 f/1.4, and the other being approximately 50mm f/4 lens baby composer! I haven’t shot primes in a while, and I do enjoy it over zooms, but not when I’m rushed or expected certain images. I definitely think a full morning of manual focusing can make your brain work as hard as any history book. I just cant justify the price of the AF model of the 85 f/1.4 when optic wise they’re so similar!

Here are a few shot with the 85 f/1.4 particularly of the AZ240SX.ORG drivers!! I miss PIR soo much!

I like the stance of this car, and the motor, still up in the air about the custom sheet metal pull in the rear. I’ve felt this way since the first time I saw this car in PHX a few years back.

Its rocking now ITB’s from the GTIR which by itself is a ton of work. If I recall correctly, new throttle cable, plenum, fuel rail. Whatever, getting off-topic. heres a pic!

lens baby composer pics! Heres one of local Just Drift Drivers, Mike Bolanos! He sure has come a long way since the Hankook drift events!

and one of a local driver who’s car never runs conveniently during an event who also runs Royal Flush Appearal, but needs more t-shirts, RAY! (I’m just kidding, but didn’t I warn you about deathworks injectors when you got them?)

and finally two action shots, this pretty much sums up grassroot drifting I think from cars built from the bottom up, to cars with bare essentials to have fun in!

and lastly my favorite of the day. These images don’t look bad for no post processing, just batch processed the watermarks on because I’m so far behind on updates!

Thanks for checking in! I’ll have more updates soon! Thanks again to Nick and staff for putting on THE only drift events for the las vegas grassroot community.
