XDC Las Vegas

May 23, 2010 Leave a comment

This past weekend was XDC (xtreme drift circuit) here in Las Vegas. I worked Friday day and night and missed Friday’s practice and most of the day Saturday due to over-sleeping. I went with the intentions on hanging out with a few friends that were in town and shoot my friend George’s FC. It didn’t happen unfortunately due to both our hectic schedules and simply bad timing, however congrats on placing 3rd George and congrats on the baby any day now!!
side note: I really wish FD ProAM would be at PIR instead of FIR this year, I’d love to see a pro-drift event out there, that track is glorious!!!

I don’t have a lot of pics to choose from unfortunately, I got there THAT late. OOPs. This is George’s gorgeous LS1 powered FC. One of my favorite FC’s ever right up there with JTP’s. George’s build is so tedious and well done, I remember when he used to drive his “sil8ty” to the Hankook Series back in 2003-4? Driving from AZ to vegas with no A/C is something I think we’ll all never do again. What were we thinking back then?

A lot of FD drivers are doing both comps, Forrest Wang, Alex Pfiefer, and Quoc Ly were both out there this weekend tearing it up! Alex’s SC300 is another great build. Not a fan of the flames, but I think he cleaned up the decals a bit since the last I’ve seen it.

This was the first time LVMS let anyone use the inside road-course for drifting. Turn one seemed to be the culprit of the day during tandem, the long sweeping entry would throw a lot of the drivers off-course.
The media spots to shoot weren’t ideal at all honestly unless I had a DX camera with a 1.4x tele converter or a 400mm on a FX. The images are heavily cropped, I’m not pleased. Hopefully I stay on track and save up enough for a D300s back up body, aiming for end of july through mid august. (kind of a b-day present to myself!) Until next time!!

VD016 recap!

January 19, 2010 1 comment

Vegas drift had another successful event at the LVMS bullring parking lot. Not as many drivers as last time, but tons of track time. Good job to Nick Dizon and staff! Heres some images from the event, the rest can be found HERE

Two highlights, one of local videographer Joshua Herron who just released his 10:42 2009 Formula D recap! We had a after-drift event launch party for it! Definitely worth watching! check it out HERE

Second is a quick video from vd016 from Darin Ferraro, who runs APEXKINGS.COM and owns this beautiful GTR. I have a quick cameo in his video, listen for the heartbeat. Check that video out on youtube HERE

Thanks for checking up!

VD POSITIVE

January 8, 2010 5 comments

Vegas Drift had its VD016 Pre-tech inspection on Thursday night at Garage Vegas. Garage Vegas is something special to the Las Vegas drifting community because its a place that they can go and have seasoned veterans point them in the right direction. Garage Vegas started as partnership between drivers who just needed a place to build and work on cars like their owns. Vegas Drift’s own Mello, who’s had his share of VIP rides to 240’s, and Pro-am driver Shawn Coward, and Formula D/D1 USA champ Forrest Wang. It just snapped one morning, that working under a car port or out of a storage unit is just not cutting it anymore. They have all the tools and the knowledge to get the job done, and very very clean work at that. When you walk into Garage Vegas, you see cars with full cages, tubbed fenders, stitch-welded chassis and gussets galore. Another thing I noticed was how somebody there really loves to weld. From the work benches, racks, and even a grind rail for bmx/skating after hours. Not a bad gig they got going over there!

The hottest thing there were Forrest Wang’s new “Wangles” which are cut-shortened spindles for that extra-gangsta angle! Check out a set on his s14. Project Mu disc brakes are absolutely ridiculous. Oh, for the photography guys, Sigma 15mm Fish + sb900 on cam sb800 off cam. I liked this shot a lot!

I thought the brake calipers were HUGE on those, then across the garage is “wang-mobile #2” with these ENDLESS calipers. These cars are so money!! These are what every s-chassis owner would dream of having!! I remember seeing Forrest’s BN s14 for the first time and being blown away especially from a driver with no major backings. +1 for the privateers!!

Here’s motor shot of Shawn’s almost finished 2010 rebuild. Lots of chrome, anodized blue, and pearl white overwhelming the engine bay. Kind of makes this fisheye shot legit because it can throw you off if you stare at it too long!!

And lastly, one more of Forrest’s s14.5’s engine bay, (it seems like this is a Forrest Wang feature by now but I assure you it’s not, that’s maybe later in the future!) This pictures funny to me because the sticker “SNAFU” (which is a bmx accy company) just kept making me think of ZT’s “BASTFU”! (sorry if you don’t get it, you probably failed!)

Lots of grilling, drinking, good times at Garage Vegas. Everyone passed tech got a “VD POSITIVE” sticker, which in its own is just awesome. Thanks guys!

Formula D> Judgment Day!!

October 21, 2009 5 comments

I just drove back home to Las Vegas after a surprisingly hot weekend in Southern California! For the first time ever it got hotter on the drive to California, which led me to believe this weekend was going to be nuts! Lots of privateers in top 16 such as Michael Essa, Matt Powers and Las Vegas’ own Tommy Suell! I have to admit that this year of Formula D has by far been my favorite, literally anything can happen, and its a lot more exciting from a spectator’s POV. I have to thank FD for constantly raising the bar and keeping things interesting for sure! Congrats to Ryan Tuerk, Tyler McQuarrie, and Tanner Foust for Top 3 in that order! Also Chris Forsberg for the overall points champion of 2009 FD season!!

Heres one of Tommy Suell listening in on the drivers meeting!! Tommy was on some kind of crazy pills throughout the weekend because he was straight killing it throughout the weekend! He made it to top 16!! Tommy’s SR’d 86′ entry speeds were among the fastest in top 32!!

Heres Michael Essa sitting at the grid patiently waiting during top 32. His FC didn’t go home looking so pretty, but he put on a helluva show!
Outside of the pit area there were tons of cars at the show, but one that stood out by far was this quad rotor beast sitting at the APR-Performance booth. This car will be running in the Redline Unlimited Time Attack class!

First thing from afar that stood out was the huge fender flares, gt wing, stance and cage. upon further inspection its NA quad rotor sealed the deal!!!

This 370z stood out, as I think 370z’s are growing on me, and it also made me wonder when they will make an appearance in Formula D. Maybe someone will have one in 2010? Either way, I think these things look great, even though this thing needs to be slammed into the earth! (lower!)

Samuel Hubinette had his Dodge Viper wrapped in Shaun Carlson livery, and seriously never looked any better! He definitely got this thing done quick! There was also a short video of Shaun Carlson played “in memory of” before the main event! In this photo, a few repairs were being done on the Viper the night before the main event and gave the opportunity for this shot!

Another buddy of mine, Ireland’s own Eric O’Sullivan killing it during practice! One of many who suffered engine failure throughout the weekend, but still put on a show! I hope to see all the Irish guys’ bring the heat next year!! Notice the cast of South Park on the back window! Supposedly Matt Stone and Trey Parker were out in the crowd somewhere!!

Heres one for the privateers! One of Michael Essa KILLING IT! Hopefully we see them next year all next year.

Overall it was a great event and I had tons of fun! Can’t wait for next season!

Lighting

July 4, 2009 1 comment

With my work/school schedule, shooting at optimal times is hard for me. I shoot whenever I can fit it in, and portable power is a must. I usually have at least 3 speedlights on me at a time, but I decided for the next 2 cars to use 2 AB800’s and my Vagabond II (portable power pack).

Virtual Works Racing is a local shop that does all fabrication in house. From intake/turbo manifolds to roll cages, to one off suspension parts. A good friend of mine, Juddi Lin is working on updating their website/myspace page and long time friend with the shop owner. The supra shown below is shop owner Dana Westover’s daily driver. Dana puts out some of the fastest and cleanest drag supra’s on the west coast. You might recognize his drag supra which is the blue mkiv on the bfgoodrich ads that are still in print. Anyways, 850+ hp, daily driven, stock interior with roll bar/door bars. Thought I’d work on my lighting. I actually want to shoot some of their manifolds for fun some day. Their work there is top notch!

I shot this car later that day. This is Nick Dizon’s daily driven Nissan 350z. Fresh from the paint shop with brand new Origin aero. Nick is the owner of the vegasdrift website, and in charge of all their SICK local events. He’s also throwing the vegas pro am for formula d vegas. check it out if you didnt see the flyer a few posts back at vegasproam.com. I wish we had these monthly events when I was still driving. It’s actually hard to go to one of his events and not give in and buy a missile car to destroy at the local jams.

Forrest Wang so happened to be in town, with his new daily driven s14, and met up during the photoshoot. I did grab a few pics, not my best rig shot, but this was the widest i had on me at the time (Tamron 17-35 on D300). I ended up having problems with that lens copy, and had to actually swap it out for another one. Quality control is a problem across the board it seems no matter what company. heres one of the quick edits. congrats to forrest for 3rd place during D1 Anaheim!

forrest

On another note… I really need to up my game, I think my job/school/personal life really conflicts with shooting, and I need to maybe challenge myself more. I think I might do a weekly photo challenge to keep this blog healthy. (after my 2nd trip to hawaii july 12-22) Check for updates from there as well. If I could get more cars featured places that would be nice as well….hmm…..lots to do..

April events

Its Round one of Formula D, in Streets of Long Beach!! There are a lot of new drivers, new vehicles and new sponsors for the 2009 season!! I’m really hoping Eric O’sullivan, Matt Powers, Tommy Suell and Michael Essa do well this season! Other than that Boso’s new rasta s15 looks amazing in action, T.Faust’s scion is questionable, Rhys got eliminated in the first round in his new Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and poor Tommy, Ueo wrecked into him during practice thanks to poor flaggers on the track. This year its top 32 tandem and it made it 100x better!

The following weekend was VegasDrift 011 @ Buffalo Bills Casino (Primm, NV) It was great that the Arizona folks made it out. (George and Chase). George’s new LS1 FC is boner-town! It was a great event, but unfortunately I had to leave early due to work. Oh well that’s life!
