So I shot my first football game ever over this Labor Day Weekend! I wish I could have spent a little more time on the field shooting, but I had to cover more than just the game itself. I definitely enjoyed myself out there, I haven’t shot any sports or anything besides the norm (nightlife/event/celeb work) in a long time. I had the shortest lens on the field, had huge lens envy, but it worked out well. One day I’ll get a 300 AFS-II, if I can justify keeping it in my arsenal. I hope to shoot more, I really enjoyed my short time out there!

Right after the game, I had to head to the Wynn and change wardrobe to shoot Tryst nightclub and XS! Both venues were packed and super hard to navigate due to the massive amounts of people in attendance! Definitely a hectic/fun Saturday for everyone I know!

Here’s some quick pics!

and….one of the girls for good measure!

Hope you guys’ had a fun/safe Labor Day Weekend! Check back soon!

Birthday woes…

August 27, 2010 Leave a comment

Again, I barely have time to blog anymore, I apologize. (Also sorry for the lack of photos on this post, I figure if I don’t post this now, it will be weeks before it actually goes up!!) My birthday past, wow exactly a month ago! Things have been quite ridiculous lately. I took 4 days off two weeks ago to visit my dad and friends all over in Socal. Awesome cake above from Thao and Jacob! I returned to Vegas to absolute Mayhem! The biggest change was I no longer had a shower, it was completely gone, and for it seemed like a week (but was 2 days in all actuallity)! After all the construction (banging,noise)/lack of sleep, I got a pretty BOSS marble shower in the end. Meanwhile, work was non-stop, I was working maybe 13-14 venues/events each week until last.

One thing I bought for this trip was a laptop/camera bag combo that I’ve been looking at for the longest time. The Think Tank UD50 (Urban Disguise 50) is a godsend, happy birthday to me! I can fit my old 15″ macbook pro, gripped d700, 3x sb800s, 24-70, 70-200, and a prime lens easily. the bag isn’t really huge, but with a good amount of gear it gets kinda fat like how you feel after “all you can eat” sushi!!

My birthday did get me kind of down, as I felt I haven’t achieved my goals for that age quite yet. I got sick and tired of a few things, one thing was my old website, so I spent a good four days on a new layout/v2.0 and I think its a huge upgrade. The site has fullscreen capabilities, easy navigation, Ipod/Iphone capabilities, and my facebook/twitter widgets!! It’s basically what I was lacking. The galleries in the portfolio section aren’t full yet, but I’ve been so busy I gave it an early launch. You gotta check it out and leave me some feedback! Check it out…..HERE

I did some other minor upgrades as well. I purchased Photomechanic for my Macbook. It is such a time saver when it comes to sorting hundreds of images taken nightly. I also upgraded my d300 to a d300s this week. I’m very happy with that move, the back of the d300s is very much like my d700. The multi-select button is improved, dual card slots FTW, 720p video and I like how the live view has its own dedicated button now, it definitely helps for overhead/crowd shots in the nightclubs. Another cool thing is the custom functions on this thing, the d300s is on par with the d700 where as the d300 had a few things it couldn’t do (custom function wise).

I also gave in after all these years I purchased my first pair of pocketwizard plus II’s. I got them strictly for remote triggering (cams not strobes). The Radiopopper JRx’s have been glorious for strobes/speedlites, but the on/off switch is the trigger when trying to trigger a remote cam, and it cant shoot in bursts. Either way, its about time. There are reasons these things are the industry standard still for all these years!

My vehicle was broken into a week ago. Window was smashed, and a camera bag with my “Just In Case” stuff was stolen. Cam Batteries, AA batteries, some CF cards, and other small things were taken. Luckily my insurance covered the window, and partial of the items stolen, but it was a terrible inconvenience. I spent the next 2 days cleaning out my garage, and can actually garage park the vehicle now. I still need window tint badly!

So I realize I’ve been MIA for a bit, but I’ve been slammed at work doing 10-14 venues per week and had a nice short 3.5 day vacation visiting my dad and friends all over Socal. Thao and Jacob were awesome as usual, I went to the best sports therapist/chiropractor ever in long beach, and had my Gyukaku, The Boiling Crab and my Pink Berry fix. Simply glorious!

So I managed to squeeze some time in for a shoot with Brooke. I told her I’ve been wanting to take some photos on the strip for quite some time now, since I basically pass these spots every night on the way to or from work. We managed to go to two locations, and get some decent shots. Lighting was very basic, nikon sb800 speedlight in a silver umbrella on almost all the shots, I figured there would be a lot of foot-traffic so i figured the less I brought the better.

I did realize a few things during this shoot however. I miss having prime lenses, and that I really can’t rely on my SU-800 outdoors, and its deemed useless compared to my radiopoppers. (RF>IR) The SU-800 is a great tool, its just for what I do and how much I make its really just another overlapping tool, and inconsistent (outdoors) at that! If they made an RF version of the SU-800 it’d be gold!!

I wanted to add in this black and white, I originally intended the set to be black and white but decided to go with color because it was so vivid straight out of camera. I really need to start shooting more portraits, I’ve got a lot on my plate at the moment and need to figure a lot of stuff out still. Hopefully after a quick 3-4 day in California again for my birthday will help clear my mind. I know this was a short post, hopefully I’ll be able to follow up sooner than later! Thanks!

Memorial Day Weekend

May 31, 2010 1 comment

Wow, I’m actually relieved this weekend has finally come to a halt, there were way too many things going on! Grand Opening of my new favorite pool on the Vegas Strip, Encore Beach Club/Surrender Night Club, Steve Aoki, Kaskade, Erick Morillo and Deadmau5 and more all in one weekend! Thankfully I only had a few things to cover, but that plus the traffic and the shennanigans inside the clubs/casinos, it was a handful!!

Above is Ne-Yo’s live performance at Surrender Nightclub. Partying at Surrender was Paris Hilton and her entourage. Ne-Yo invited her on-stage during his song “Miss Independent”. You can kinda see her bottom left in that picture, but distortion got the best of her.

I missed the shot due to getting hit in the face with a giant video cam (knocking the glasses half way off my face). Yep……one of THOSE nights. HAH!
Anyways….If you follow my flickr account there are two photos uploaded including this one, the reasoning made me LOL!

This weekend closed for me with Erick Morillo/Morillo Madness at Tao Nightclub. Every venue I went to was packed to capacity. Time to enjoy the rest of my day off and start the routine all over again!

Oh yeah, I got a great deal on a Nikon D90+grip, so I went for that plus some much needed accessories vs the D300s, as it would have cost me substantially more for that body alone. The D90 + Nikkor 17-35 is my full-time “nightlife/pool” camera. All the images above were taken with it, the noise levels remind me of my old Canon 1d2 at ISO 1600, but without the canon blotchy-ness noise. The AF is certainly a lot worse, and the viewfinder is TINY. BUT, it works well, and I’m stoked i didn’t have to hold a gripped d700+24-70+sb800 through this mess.

I hope you guys enjoyed the read, and I’m glad everyone I know got home safely this weekend! Until next time!

XDC Las Vegas

This past weekend was XDC (xtreme drift circuit) here in Las Vegas. I worked Friday day and night and missed Friday’s practice and most of the day Saturday due to over-sleeping. I went with the intentions on hanging out with a few friends that were in town and shoot my friend George’s FC. It didn’t happen unfortunately due to both our hectic schedules and simply bad timing, however congrats on placing 3rd George and congrats on the baby any day now!!
side note: I really wish FD ProAM would be at PIR instead of FIR this year, I’d love to see a pro-drift event out there, that track is glorious!!!

I don’t have a lot of pics to choose from unfortunately, I got there THAT late. OOPs. This is George’s gorgeous LS1 powered FC. One of my favorite FC’s ever right up there with JTP’s. George’s build is so tedious and well done, I remember when he used to drive his “sil8ty” to the Hankook Series back in 2003-4? Driving from AZ to vegas with no A/C is something I think we’ll all never do again. What were we thinking back then?

A lot of FD drivers are doing both comps, Forrest Wang, Alex Pfiefer, and Quoc Ly were both out there this weekend tearing it up! Alex’s SC300 is another great build. Not a fan of the flames, but I think he cleaned up the decals a bit since the last I’ve seen it.

This was the first time LVMS let anyone use the inside road-course for drifting. Turn one seemed to be the culprit of the day during tandem, the long sweeping entry would throw a lot of the drivers off-course.
The media spots to shoot weren’t ideal at all honestly unless I had a DX camera with a 1.4x tele converter or a 400mm on a FX. The images are heavily cropped, I’m not pleased. Hopefully I stay on track and save up enough for a D300s back up body, aiming for end of july through mid august. (kind of a b-day present to myself!) Until next time!!

Happy Birthday to the GROUND!!!

So, I tried to tell myself to do weekly blog updates but failed already at that!! Sometimes my weeks are slammed with dj’s or celebrities, and sometimes their just cookie-cutter nightlife stuff, these last two have just been the cookie cutter jam. The beginning of last week started with bumping into Bullet for my Valentine at Wasted Space at the Hard Rock Hotel. Cool dudes, would have been rad to see them preform!

All the tuner guy’s that follow this blog should recognize her, Corissa Furr was at Maxim’s Casting Call at Tao Beach last week.

As for the nightlife stuff goes, its photos like these that make me LOL and make it worth it!! Sometimes its really hard doing it every day, but hopefully it’ll pay off in the near future. With that said, Memorial day weekend will be nuts guaranteed!! I kind of can’t wait for it to be over! I’m about to book a flight to Seattle first weekend in July, for a small vacation/FD get-away weekend with friends! It will be my first vacation all year! I’m super stoked!

side note: I just updated my on-location bag/contents! I can’t wait to put it in good use! the wind has been kinda crazy the last few days though! don’t forget your sand bags or happy birthday to the ground!!!

Summer means a million different things this year!!! HOT!, Pool Season!, Over-Worked!, Caffiene-Overload and Overheating SB900’s! are a few examples. I had quite the last few weeks, I’ve been meaning to update. I’ll try to keep this in chronological order for the most part. I was super-stoked almost 2 Saturday’s ago I assisted photographer Blair Bunting who is a friend-of-a-friend, and featured photographer on . The subject was a Indy 500 driver that resides here in Las Vegas for a feature in Car and Driver Magazine.

Sometimes we cover cool events like the Grand Opening Screening of Iron Man 2, with Stan Lee at Brendan theaters. There was a private meet and greet above the movie theaters in the Johnny Brendan VIP suite, which was full of Iron man/Marvel Comics memorabilia for the night. Not to mention the free private-screening of Iron Man 2!! That movie gave me Scarlett Johansson Fever!!!

Work has been overwhelming, summer has officially started and SpyOn is doing its annual “Hot 100” and “Friday Night Live”. Both are Friday events, both containing concerts as well as the competition itself. Shown above is Dorrough, who’s most known for “Ice Cream Paint Job” performing at Wet Republic.

Later the same day at the Hard Rock Flyleaf performed for Friday Night live. Apparently they’re a christian rock band who doesn’t support alcohol, so we were not allowed to photograph them due to the open bar event. So here’s a random guy from a band headlining for them.

Hot 100 surprised me because Misa Campo was there. She’s always been one of the more “classy” import models vs the tons of trashy ones. So coming from mainly car-culture-blogging it was nice to see her out of the tuner persona.
